SideShow Showcase 1/27/12

27 Jan

It’s time again for our SideShow Showcase, where we honor this week’s best of the best!

First off is Chad‘s SideShows for Archer. He’s done a great job catching all the show’s references and trivia throughout these first episodes of the hilarious cartoon’s third season.

If you love that dimwitted spy Archer, you won’t want to miss Chad’s Archer SideShows! And for you zombie fans, Chad has great SideShows for every episode of The Walking Dead, which returns on February 12th!

This week, our friends at USA presented a great SideShow for the episode “Upper West Side Story” of their hit series White Collar! Their links took us all over the Internet, with comical supplementary content ranging from 19th century poetry, to ’80′s romantic comedy clips, to fashion retailers.

Don’t miss White Collar, Tuesdays on USA, be sure to check out their SideShow – the show within the show!

Rounding out this week’s Showcase is Karma‘s SideShow for Sunday’s episode of the half-hilarious, half-horrifying series ShamelessI’ll Light a Candle for You Every Day.” She brought some deep analysis of the show, while simultaneously expressing the emotions we were all feeling.

That’s it for this week’s Showcase! Are your creative juices flowing yet? Sign up to start making your own SideShows! See you next Friday with some more fun SideShow cards, and until then, happy watching!

SideShow Playbook: The Fundamental Five

24 Jan

Want to start creating a Miso SideShow but just don’t know where to start? We’ll be sharing a series of posts to give you tricks of the SideShow trade called the SideShow Playbook! Introducing the very first post:

The Fundamental Five: 5 no-fail ways to making a great SideShow!

1. Social and shareable quotes!

People love sharing quotes from their favorite TV shows, but what quotes get the most shares? How about something that makes you laugh or inspires you. Here’s a rule of thumb: add quotes that people would want to share to Facebook and Twitter. The best quotes get the discussion started!

2. New face on screen? Tag the actor or actress profile on IMDb!

How many times have you watched someone on screen and forget where else you’ve seen them from? Make it easy to find out what other TV shows or movies the actor or actress has been in on your SideShow. Adding an additional fun fact is also recommended… because who wouldn’t want to know more about that hot guest star? :)

3. Share Music!

You’re watching the new episode House M.D. and hear a great song. Here’s your chance to easily tag the track name and artist for fans to discover! Most importantly, provide a link to the song on Spotify, iTunes or YouTube so people can listen or buy!

4. Cliffhangers are great opportunities to ask a question!

In any given episode, there are moments when the plot thickens and everyone is speculating something. Who do you think is the killer? Should Robin and Barney date again?

It’s your moment to ask a question! With a SideShow, you have two options:

  • Polls: best when there are clear options to choose from and the easiest way for fans to share their opinion
  • Open-ended: great for making predictions, especially at the end of an act break or episode

5. Explain the Reference

Did they just mention something outside of common knowledge? Share a quick explanation and link to an article or site to learn more. Whether it the medical term of the week, an offhand mention of obscure trivia or a parody, educate your viewer with a card sharing your knowledge!

New Updates for Miso at CES 2012

2012 is already off to a great start! We’re excited to announce a new partner in the tech and entertainment industry: Audible Magic, a pioneer in audio content recognition services.

With Audible Magic’s digital fingerprinting technology, Miso will be able to identify live, never-before-seen content on TV as it airs. Adding frame-specific automated content recognition to Miso’s flexible platform expands the ways we can deliver a true synchronized content experience to every TV viewer, and we can’t wait to have it available and ready for use in our iPhone app in the near future. You can find out more information here.

If you’re attending CES 2012, come check out a live demonstration of a prototype of the Miso and the Audible Magic TViD service for yourself. Stop by the Audible Magic booth (73507) in the Bellini Ballroom, on the second floor of the Venetian.

We’re excited as we enter the new era of television, and hope you are too! If you haven’t already, download our free app in the iTunes store.

See you at the show!

Tune In to TV with SideShows

14 Dec

From the start, our vision at Miso was to make TV better. People love sharing what they’re watching but there’s a whole lot more to your favorite shows. We’re excited to share a new and fun way to watch TV: SideShows.

SideShows are interactive content experiences that play on your phone while you watch TV.

How many times have you wondered what song was playing on a show, or wanted to discuss who will win the Iron Chef Chairman Challenge? Maybe you’ve seen an actor before, but just can’t quite place where you’ve seen him. Or perhaps Phil Dunphy said something hilarious and you want to share it with your friends.

With SideShows, TV watching is simply better and more fun.

We’ve partnered with DIRECTV and AT&T U-Verse so Miso can automatically find what you’re watching and sync it to your phone. Of course, SideShows work while you watch a show live or when you catch up on DVR: it doesn’t matter when or how you watch.

Here’s how it works:

We have created an open publishing platform that allows anybody to create a SideShow. Whether you’re the expert superfan, a TV blogger, comedian, celebrity or a network…Miso gives you a simple publishing platform to build your own second screen application. By giving access to everyone, we believe the best experiences will emerge. Not everyone can be on TV, but everyone can create a SideShow.

Find out more here.

Early networks that have created a SideShow include Showtime, FOX, Food Network, DIRECTV’s Audience Network, Halogen, Science Channel, and CBS Television Distribution. You can check out SideShows of some of your favorite programs like Dexter, Bones, Damages, The Next Iron Chef, and many more to come.

SideShows will be available in the next version of Miso, so stay tuned!

As always, we want to hear your thoughts. Connect with us on Twitter, Facebook, or GoMiso.com.

Khosla Invests in Miso to Lead TV 2.0

1 Dec

It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come since January. We announced our Series A round, approached 100K users, announced a partnership with OWN and introduced the Miso API.

Now, we’re excited to announce that we’re bringing on Khosla Ventures as a new investor in Miso as a part of an additional $4M in financing. Khosla Ventures led the round with Google Ventures and Hearst Interactive Media, and to date we have raised $6M.

Khosla Ventures is known for its reputation for building great companies, such as Square and Meebo, and we’re excited to be a part of that same roster. We’re grateful for the rare opportunity to learn from Vinod Khosla, one of the greatest investors, product thinkers, team builders and entrepreneur over the last few decades.

“People are changing the way they watch television. They are also on their phones and tablets, and this creates new opportunities for innovation in the second screen space. We feel that Miso is leading the way.”    –Vinod Khosla

For the next year, we’re confident that with his leadership and working with the Khosla team we’ll grow our unique community of a quarter-million strong to tens of millions and much more.

Here’s a quick look back at the past year:

  • We’ve collaborated and innovated with key TV partners to deliver a true connected second screen experience. With partnerships from DIRECTV and AT&T U-Verse, our app communicates with the TV receiver to let you know what’s on your TV and where you are in the show. This makes the second screen experience more seamless and natural.
  • We’ve provided a more extended experience to enrich TV. We’ve always believed a synchronized experience with your mobile devices and TV is a key part of Miso …and now it’s here. With Showtime’s Dexter as our first launch partner, now you can get interesting tidbits, facts, quotes, and more when you watch your show.

Quite a year for a team of twelve so far, and this doesn’t even cover the ability to synchronize Miso with the TV via audio, delivering social TV solutions on the TV, partnering with Facebook to make TV sharing even easier, and much more.

But we’re just scratching the surface. Stay tuned – we have a lot of new developments with the platform, partners and more coming. And we can’t wait to share them with you!
